While traveling in Europe in 1878, American author Mark Twain attempted to learn German. He later described his exasperation with German grammar and its endless oddities and absurdities in his essay „The Awful German Language“.

Twain particularly despised the German habit of combining words. „They are not words but alphabetic professions“, he grumbles.
